Saligao: a death in our village...

Friday's newspapers carried the advert of the death of a prominent villager, Col Edwin D'Souza (Khot), whom many from Saligao would know as the village dentist who practised at Arrarim in the 'seventies, after retiring from the military. Col Edwin was a good man, with a smile on his face, and very good in dealing with patients. Saligaonet offers its condolences to the family. Below is the text of the advert, along with a photograph of the young colonel in military uniform including a smart cap and his decorations visible on the chest:

DEATH: Col Edwin D'Souza (Khot), Arrarim Saligao Expired peacefully at the age of 91 on February 26, 2006. Beloved husband of Quennie (Vicky), loving father/father-in-law of Venetia/Shaukat (Canada), Rowena/Philip (USA). Cherished grandfather of Vijay/Stephanie, Nadia, Aron, Ravi and Priya. Dear brother of (late) Eric, Elliot and (late) Lou. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Funeral service at Mae de Deus Church, Saligao at 10 am on Saturday, March 4, 2006.

Up the hill: a music fest in Goa

MONTE MUSIC FESTIVAL, bringing together the Indian and Western classical music festival, is being held on March 3-5, 2006. Recitals by members of the Forum of the Art with Nauzer (piano/violin) and Susan Badyari (flute), santoor, vocal rcital (by soprano Joanne Marie D'Mello), Bharatnatyam, Goa State Strings Orchestra (conducted by Nauzer), Kala Academy String Orchestra (conducted by Teresa Figueiredo), sitar recital by Chhote Rahimat Khan and a choral recital by Ensemble Peregrinacao (Pilgrimage Ensemble of Portugal) with Joanne Marie D'Mello an conducted by Teresita Gutierrez. The Ensemble Peregrinacao will also perform at the GVM Nargao on March 6 (Mon) 7 pm Entry free. Open day (Fri) admission by invite only.

While Goa had a bitter-sweet uneasy equation with Portugal, it's probably never too late to think in terms of bridge-building.

Event on issues in Goa... problem areas

Dr Fatima Gracias of the Research Institute for Women, Goa sent in an invite. They're having a panel discussion on "Important Issues in Goa today--problem areas". It will be held on Thursday, March 9, 2006 at 5.30 pm at the Riviera (Opposite Hotel Mandovi, in Panjim). Participants, says the invite, are journo Ethel Da Costa, academic Rahul Srivastava, campaigner (and former student leader) Roland Martins and Joel da Silva. The discussion will be moderated by writer (and man of many roles) Victor Rangel Ribeiro.
